Cakes are delicious and a delight. This fluffy goodness is one of those tasty treats that humans indulge in now and then. Apart from its high sugar content which can be unhealthy, cakes can be a great source of much-needed carbohydrates when consumed in small amounts. It is also known to be a source of protein.

So, it's your birthday and there's more than enough cake to go around. Your furry buddy looks at you with those cute big eyes and your knees weaken. Is it okay to feed cake to my cat? you probably wonder. So, can cats eat cake? Should cats be allowed to eat cake? Keep reading to find out all you need to know about feeding cake to your cat.

Can Cats Eat Cake?

Cats can eat cake but it should be in small amounts and occasionally. Did you know that cats are referred to as "sweet blind"? That is because they don't have the taste buds to taste sweetness. Hence, your cat will not appreciate the sweetness of a cake. Also, cakes contain ingredients that are not healthy for your cat. So, if you decide to feed cake to your cat, make sure it is only in small amounts.

Is Cake Bad For Cats?

Cakes are not toxic to cats but neither are they good for them. Cats can eat cake but it may lead to health complications if fed in excess. While cakes may be a great snack for humans, the same cannot be said of cats. Humans love cake for its sweetness and the sugar rush it fills them with. But this same reason is why cakes are bad for cats. The sugar in cakes can do a lot of harm to your feline. Also, cats cannot taste "sweet", so your furry buddy is sure not drawn to that fluffy slice on the counter because of the sweetness they get from it.

Cakes hardly offer any nutritional benefits to cats. Cats need protein to thrive but even though cakes contain some protein, it is sorely lacking in other vitamins and minerals that can nourish your cat's body. Also, the high fat and sugar content found in cakes far outweighs the meager protein content found in cakes. High levels of fat and sugars can make your cat obese and hence, set off a chain of related health complications. Not very nice, right?

Another concern is the fact that cakes are made from dairy products such as cream and butter, both of which can pose a threat to your cat's life. Most adult cats are lactose intolerant and hence, can suffer from symptoms like stomach upset, diarrhea, and/or vomiting when exposed to dairy products high in lactose.

The cons of feeding cake to your cat far outweigh the pros. However, a little piece of cake given occasionally to your cat should not cause any havoc to their health. Although, it is safer to avoid feeding them cakes at all.

Can Cats Eat Chocolate Cake?

Cat

No, cats should not eat chocolate cakes. Chocolate is considered toxic to cats, hence cats should not be fed chocolate cakes or any chocolate-based pastries at all. The two culprits in chocolate that makes it toxic to cat are caffeine and theobromine. These two chemicals can lead to fatal complications even if consumed in small quantities.

If you suspect that your cat has stolen a bite from your piece of chocolate cat, it is best to take them to your local vet immediately to avoid any uncontrollable situation that may result. Chocolate cakes can be very harmful to cats even in small amounts. It is not advisable to feed any chocolate or chocolate-based snack to your cat at all.

Can Cats Eat Cheesecake?

Cheesecake is made majorly from cream cheese and maybe sour cream, too. A lot of people think of cats as milk drinkers but this couldn't be more wrong. The majority of adult cats are lactose intolerant. That means milk and other dairy products are not healthy for them. Cats cannot process the sugar found in dairy products because they lack the enzyme called lactase which is involved in breaking down this sugar.

Cats can eat a teeny weensy bit of cheesecake and be just fine. However, it doesn't change the fact that cheesecake contains ingredients that are harmful to your cat's health. Therefore, cats should only be allowed to eat a little piece of cheesecake occasionally.

Apart from the heavy cheese content in cheesecake, other ingredients that may be found in cheesecakes that can pose a threat to your cat include chocolate, raisins, and xylitol; all of which are toxic to your cat.

Cats can eat cheesecake but like any other cake, it is not healthy for your cat. You can discuss other healthier snack options with your vet.

Can Cats Eat Fruit cake?

Cake

I get it. You are probably frustrated by the fact that you have got a cake-fiend in your hands but you are not sure if your fluff ball should be getting any cake at all. Fruit cake is just like any other cake, safe for the fruits and nuts it contains. Cats can have an occasional small bite of your homemade fruit cake but it is not considered healthy.

Although fruit cake may contain fruits that are not harmful to cats, it contains other ingredients like raisins that are toxic to cats. Also, some nuts (like macadamia nuts) are not healthy for cats and hence, should not be fed to cats.

So, can cats eat fruit cake? Yes, they can. But it should not be a regular part of their diet. Finally, you may want to avoid feeding store-bought fruit cake to your cat as it may contain preservatives that can be really harmful to them.

Final Words

Cats can have a bite-size amount of cake once in a while. However, chocolate cakes are an absolute no-no for cats; chocolates are toxic to cats. If you would like to know a healthier snack choice for your kitty, consult with your vet.
